You’ve got your sound, you’ve got your look – but if you’re a musician in today’s ultra-digital world, where each internet user spends an average of nearly seven hours online each day, that’s only half the story. You’ll also need a web presence, because let’s not forget how many huge artists have been discovered online – The Weeknd, Charlie Puth, and Justin Bieber, to name a few.

To build a great online presence, you need a top-notch website builder. That’s why we’ve carried out in-depth research to sort the legends from the one-hit wonders, and find the platform that’ll work for you. We’ll take you through the six best website builders to get you noticed, take you to the next level, and help you make money selling your music online.

The 6 best website builders for musicians are:

  1. Wix Best for ease of use
  2. Squarespace Best platform for music-based websites
  3. GoDaddy Fastest way to build a music website
  4. Weebly Best for email marketing
  5. Duda Best for simple templates
  6. Jimdo Great value for money

Wix came out on top in our research, rocking a 4.9 out 5 rating (excuse the pun!). This is mostly thanks to its awesome analytics tools, which let you view the number of downloads, plays, and shares your music gets. Plus, Wix offers a selection of beautiful templates designed for musicians. Squarespace is a close second with its elegant customizable audio player, while GoDaddy comes in third place for its simple-to-navigate editor that works well for beginners.

We’re pretty proud of our research process, because not many sites can say they’ve carried out such in-depth testing before making recommendations. In addition to our overall website builder research categories, we’ve applied weighted research criteria to the builders on this list to determine which platforms are best for musicians in particular.

First, here’s a look at the categories we investigate in our overall research:

  • Ease of use
  • Design flexibility
  • Value for money
  • Feature quality
  • Help and support
  • Customer satisfaction

As a musician, we know just how important it is to have a website that represents your artist style and personality. Most website builders allow you to sell items online – but most of the time, you’ll need to upgrade to a more expensive ecommerce plan in order to do so. If you just want to sell a few items on your regular website builder plan without paying for ecommerce, then you can use a flexible solution like Square Online Checkout links. These are shareable links that let you securely accept online payments from customers.

To use these checkout links, all you have to do is create a free Square Online account, name and price your product, and create a checkout link to place on your site – the process is really simple!

Alternatively, Wix lets you sell your merchandise by adding an online store to your website. We’ve put together a full Wix ecommerce review if you want to find out more!

  • May need extra apps to grow your site
Read Review

Wix has climbed the ranks in our most recent in-house testing and is now our number one website builder for music websites! Why did it surpass other builders on the market? Well, in addition to its easy drag-and-drop editor, Wix also offers a ton of apps that let you stream and sell your audio – like Wix Music, for example.

Wix also has music-specific templates to really bring your website to life, whereas other builders, like Squarespace, only have general entertainment templates – which is why Wix has the upper hand here.

Features

Musician Website Builder Features: Wix

  • Wix Music tool: Upload your music and sell downloads of it, commission free
  • Wix Music Analytics: See stats on your top tracks played, top downloads, and highest revenue-generating tracks
  • Wix ShoutOut: Powerful email marketing

On top of this, all of the music sales you make through your Wix website are commission free, so you don’t have to worry about fielding any hidden charges. Plus, Wix lets you upload tracks in FLAC and 320 kbps MP3 files, so your audio quality is one less thing to worry about when starting out online.

In addition to these top-notch music features, Wix’s cheapest paid plan (called the Combo plan) offers:

  • 2 GB bandwidth
  • 3 GB storage
  • 30 video minutes

The Combo plan is ideal for creative portfolios, and is a great place to start your band or artist website. If you find your audience growing, you may want to consider the second-cheapest Unlimited plan, which offers:

  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • 10 GB storage
  • 1 video hour

Wix plans also come with a free domain name for the first year, and if you feel yourself needing a helping hand along the way, this builder provides 24/7 support no matter which plan you choose.

Design

Wix sets the bar high – it’s the only builder we tested that had an array of music-specific templates. Other platforms, like Duda, have only one specific template for this category, while Squarespace has templates for the general entertainment sector.

Wix’s music templates are super easy to customize and design, which is why this builder is our top scorer for ease of use. The drag-and-drop editor is simple, and if you want an even more hands-off experience, you can even let the Wix ADI tool design a site for you based on your answers to a few questions!

wix design templates

Other builders, like Duda and Site123, are also easy to use – however, Wix is the clear winner, because it combines ease of use with powerful features.

Pricing

Wix operates on a “freemium” model, so you can get a site off the ground without spending a cent – you’ll just need to upgrade to a paid plan to get rid of the Wix advertising, and the automated ‘wixsite’ in your domain name. Although you can hold onto your free Wix site for as long as you like, it’s good to note that you won’t be able to remove Wix ads or use Google analytics without upgrading, too.

Wix’s cheapest paid plan, the Combo plan, costs just $16/month when billed annually. The second-cheapest Unlimited plan costs $22/month.

Want to Sell Your Music Online for Free?

The Wix Music App lets you sell your music online without needing to upgrade to a premium plan! You can upload your track file, give your track a name and even link it to a genre of your choice. You’ll then be able to choose the price of your track in the advanced streaming options.

#2. Squarespace – $16/month

Best platform for promoting gigs

Squarespace

Best platform for promoting gigs

Outstanding

4.8

out of 5
  • Image-focused templates
  • Simple audio integrations
  • Social media savvy

Free trial available

Paid Plans: $16 - $49 / month

Pros

  • Customize audio files in content blocks
  • Unlimited storage on all plans
  • Best template designs of any builder

Cons

  • Not as easy to use as Wix
  • Only five music-specific templates
  • Editor doesn’t autosave for you
Read Review

Squarespace is perfect for creatives – as far as musician website builders go, it’s a great choice for promoting events and gigs. Its easy social media connectivity and elegant audio player are both ideal features for promoting your work in the best possible light. Still, Squarespace has dropped slightly below Wix in our recent testing because, although the templates are stylish, they’re a lot more generic.

Features

Musician Website Builder Features: Squarespace

  • Audio Blocks: Add audio files to customizable content blocks, and include purchase links directly underneath audio files
  • Unfold app: Create professionally designed social content to promote gigs and new tracks
  • Events pages: Advertise up to 350 events per month onsite
  • Email marketing: Choose from expertly designed email layouts, and even match the style of your emails to your website for consistency
  • Blogging: Squarespace has many templates that allow for blogging – such as ‘Cruz’ – so it’s a great place to begin if you’re looking to start a music blog

In addition to powerful music-related features, every Squarespace plan includes:

  • Unlimited storage and bandwidth
  • SSL security
  • Free custom domain for the first year

Design

In terms of design functionality, Squarespace earns the #1 spot in our website builder research. However, as we mentioned above, its relatively smaller offering of music-specific templates is why it dropped down from 4.9 to 4.7 out of 5 in this category. Squarespace has five music-specific templates, but you can pretty much customize any Squarespace template to fit this purpose.

Squarespace’s templates are sleek, modern, and offer tons of creative control – they’re perfect for the creative expression that a musical website requires!

The one drawback of this powerful design freedom is that Squarespace isn’t as easy to use as competitors like Wix – hence why Squarespace slightly dips to a 4 out of 5 for ease of use. Squarespace is still a drag-and-drop builder, and you don’t have to know anything about code in order to use it – but Wix’s editor is more intuitive!

Pricing

The cheapest Squarespace plan is the Personal plan, which is just $16/month when billed annually, or $23/month when billed monthly.

If you do want ecommerce functionality as part of your Squarespace site to sell your music online you’re looking at $27/month for the Basic ecommerce plan, or $49/month for the Advanced plan. You can sell unlimited products with both – you just get extra features with the Advanced plan.

If you want to give Squarespace a try risk free, you can test it out at no cost for 14 days – you just need to enter your email address to get going.

Fastest way to build a music website

Very Good

4.1

  • No learning curve
  • Simple editor
  • Less impressive results

Free plan available

Paid Plans: $6.99 - $469.99 / month

Pros

  • ADI editor creates website for you
  • Allows audio integrations
  • Great for getting online quickly

Cons

  • Lacks creative freedom
  • Unable to resize images or move blocks
  • Templates aren’t as powerful as Wix’s
Read Review

GoDaddy has climbed onto our list of the top six website builders for musicians after significant improvements to its template designs and customization functionality. In fact, GoDaddy has seen an overall 11.6% increase in our testing compared to pre-2021 research. For a cheap starting price of $6.99 per month, GoDaddy lets you add events pages to your site, and even offers audio integrations that let you upload music without having to install third-party apps.

Features

Musician Website Builder Features: GoDaddy

  • Audio integration: Easily upload your music with an audio block and avoid paying for third party apps
  • Events page: Integrate an events page to let your audience know when future events are taking place
  • Simple-to-navigate editor: GoDaddy’s editor comes with block sections so you can keep adding elements to your site as you go

GoDaddy is a great choice for beginners and, more specifically, beginners who don’t have a ton of time on their hands. Its features place a heavier emphasis on marketing over creativity, so it’s best if you want a professional feel to your website.

Design

GoDaddy offers a range of music-specific templates that are super easy to customize with section blocks. Although it doesn’t utilize a drag-and-drop editor like Wix, GoDaddy uses ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence) to make editing your site super easy and quick.

The simplicity of GoDaddy’s editor has its pros and cons. The great part is that you can stay relatively close to the original template, but the not-so-great part is that it lacks creative freedom. You’re unable to resize images or move blocks outside of the set parameter, which can be restrictive – especially for such a creative industry. If you’re looking for a platform that gives you a lot of design flexibility, Wix is the way to go!

Pricing

GoDaddy’s pricing plans start as low as $6.99/month (when billed annually) with the Basic plan ($9.99 if you decide to pay on a monthly basis). The cheapest paid plan offers you:

  • Free SSL
  • Custom domain
  • Email marketing tools

If you want to make the most of the platform, we’d recommend looking at GoDaddy’s Premium plan ($13.99/month when billed annually) – it gives you access to group events and advanced SEO tools for site visibility.

GoDaddy has both a free plan and a one-month free trial which provides you enough time to decide if this is the platform for you.

#4. Weebly – $6/month

Best for email marketing

Weebly

Best for email marketing

Very Good

3.9

out of 5
  • Cheapest of the top 3
  • Quality marketing tools
  • Lacks creativity

Free plan available

Paid Plans: $10 - $29 / month

Pros

  • Great value for money
  • Can switch templates after site is live
  • Engage audiences with video backgrounds

Cons

  • Not as easy to use as Wix
  • Not as stylish as Squarespace
  • Not the most customizable builder
Read Review

Weebly’s paid plans start at just $6/month and offer exciting features. However, you’ll have to install a lot of add-ons separately. Some are free, but advanced features are often paid – so you may end up paying a price similar to Wix and Squarespace just to get the same functionality!

Features

Musician Website Builder Features: Weebly

  • Weebly Promote for Email Campaigns: Use a drag-and-drop email builder to create stunning campaigns
  • Video backgrounds: Engage visitors with music videos and performances

Weebly’s email marketing features are outstanding – you can create beautifully designed messages without any technical skills. However, one downside to Weebly is that it relies heavily on its app center for music-related features. This makes for a less streamlined creative process than you’d get with other builders out there.

However, you can receive stats on your email marketing campaigns and import email contacts from sources like Gmail, Yahoo!, and Mailchimp.

Weebly’s general features are solid for beginners, but they do fall short in comparison to those of Squarespace and Wix – indeed, Weebly comes third in the features category of our research with a score of 4.3/5. For example, Weebly doesn’t offer a direct bookings or events system. Instead, you’ll have to integrate a separate app at additional cost.

Design

Although Weebly’s templates are clean and simple, its design flexibility doesn’t compare to that of other builders on the market. Weebly’s themes fail to  reflect current web design trends, which makes them slightly outdated. It scored the lowest in this category with a 2.5 out of 5.

Weebly’s minimal approach to design does mean your photos will take center stage, but overall you won’t have the same level of creative freedom or design quality that you’d get with a builder like Squarespace.

Weebly offers around 50 themes to choose from, and you can switch your theme at any time – including after you’ve published your site.

Pricing

In our musician website builder research, Weebly was the top scorer in value for money – but we actually think you’ll get the most bang for your buck with the second of Weebly’s three paid plans:

  • Personal – $6/month
  • Professional – $12/month
  • Performance – $26/month

Although the personal plan is the cheapest, we recommend the Professional plan, because its features are more on par with what your music website will need – such as free SSL security and unlimited storage.

#5. Duda – $14/month

Best for SoundCloud integrations

Duda

Best for simple templates

Good

3.6

out of 5
  • Easy to add audio widgets
  • Quality templates
  • Not great value for money

Free trial available

Paid Plans: $14 - $59 / month

Pros

  • Easily integrate features
  • Templates second only to Squarespace
  • Over 100 font styles to choose from

Cons

  • Less features than others for same price
  • Not many completely built-in features
  • Less design freedom than Squarespace
Read Review

Duda now sits in fifth place in our list of website builders for musicians, with a 3.6 out of 5 overall rating. This shows a slight decrease from our previous in-house research, largely due to Duda’s relatively high prices. Its cheapest plan costs the same as Wix’s Combo plan at $14 per month, but doesn’t offer as many tools or features as Wix does – contributing to its lower value for money score of 1.3 out of 5.

Features

Musician Website Builder Features: Duda

  • Audio widget: Easily upload SoundCloud and Mixcloud audio files to your site
  • Video backgrounds: Showcase your performances

The SoundCloud integration is a great way for you to interact with your audience by easily adding songs, podcasts or small clips to your site. Still, Duda doesn’t offer as many features as the top three builders. In the features category, it comes in fifth place with a score of 2.4/5. That said, the features Duda does offer are super useful, such as:

  • Easy-to-trigger pop-ups or special messages to help keep fans engaged
  • Free SSL

Design

Duda offers 98 mobile-responsive templates that are remarkably easy to customize – its drag-and-drop editor and optional pre-designed sections make the website building process easy. Duda’s templates also include audio and video widgets to help you integrate more of your work onsite.

That said, if you’re looking for more design freedom for your music website, then you may be better off with Wix or Squarespace – Duda’s templates are more flexible than most, but they don’t take the top spot! Still, with color overlays and 100+ font styles available, you’ll be able to include a personal touch.

Pricing

Duda’s plans start with the $14/month Basic plan, which is ideal for those just starting out in the music industry. If your audience is slightly more established, or you want to grow your site, then you may need the extra tools (like comments sections and extra branding capabilities) available on the $22/month Team plan.

$22/month is pretty pricey for a builder that lacks the features or capabilities of competitors like Wix and Squarespace – but the good news is, the Team plan offers a 14-day free trial, so you can test it out before committing!

Jimdo

Best value for money

Okay

3.1

out of 5
  • Affordable plans
  • Advert-free
  • Lacks powerful features

Free plan available

Paid Plans: $9 - $24 / month

Pros

  • Video integration engages fans
  • Template editor is beginner-friendly
  • Very budget-friendly

Cons

  • Features and support could be better
  • Not great for growth
  • Not much design flexibility
Read Review

Jimdo is an easy-to-use, ad-free website builder that gives you the toolbox you need to create a sleek site without breaking the bank. This platform creeped its way onto our list of the top six website builders for musicians, scoring a 3.1 out of 5, largely due to how simple it is to get started without the big bucks. You don’t need to be a coding whiz to use Jimdo, but you may have to settle for a more basic outcome than you’d get with some of the other builders we’ve mentioned.

Features

Musician Website Builder Features: Jimdo

  • Add Music Block: Jimdo lets you easily add a music block to your website so you can paste a link to your Spotify, iTunes, and SoundCloud accounts.
  • Video Integration: Show clips from past gigs or use a video header on your homepage
  • Social Media Connectivity: Pull existing photos from your social media and use them as wide images on your website

As well as these music-specific features, Jimdo’s cheapest paid plan (Start plan) gives you access to:

  • Free domain
  • 10 GB Bandwidth
  • 5 GB storage

Signing up to the Start plan is a great way to get your music website off the ground without having to dedicate too much time or effort to the process.

Design

Jimdo’s templates are fairly limited, and there isn’t an extensive collection of music-specific options. This is why Jimdo scores slightly lower than its competitors, earning a design flexibility score of 3.1 out of 5. Although the themes may be basic, this is where Jimdo’s ADI editor comes in to make the design process more streamlined and specific to your creative needs.

All you have to do is answer a series of questions, such as:

  • Who you’re creating your website for
  • What the website is for – e.g. to promote creative content

Once that’s done, Jimdo gets to work designing your site accordingly. Don’t worry about Jimdo completely taking over the design process – you’ll still get to add or delete blocks of content. After all, it’s your website, and it’s only right that you get the last say!

Pricing

Jimdo prides itself on offering cheaper pricing plans without compromising too much on quality. The lowest paid plan is the Start plan at $9 per month, which provides an ad-free website with up to 10 site pages and advanced SEO tools.

But the best-selling plan seems to be the Grow plan at $15 per month – and we can see why! It offers all of the Start plan features, plus social marketing so you can showcase your work to the masses.

If you’re not too sure about Jimdo, you can try out its free ‘Play’ plan to test out the editor and get a feel for the platform overall. After that, we’d recommend jumping onto a premium paid plan to really make the most out of your website building process.

Other Website Builders for Musicians

All six of the website builders ranked above have gone through our rigorous research process, and have been compared through both our overall and music-specific research categories.

But it’s good to know that there are a few other music-specific website builders out there that we haven’t analyzed yet – so until we put the following three players through our in-house process, we’ve weighed their strengths and weaknesses in these general summaries:

Bandzoogle

Bandzoogle Pros

  • Commission-free ecommerce available with every plan
  • Reasonably priced

Bandzoogle Cons

  • Sites aren’t quite at the same standard (visually or technically) as bigger website builders, such as Squarespace and Wix

Bandzoogle was literally built by musicians, for musicians – its journey began in the late 90s, when founder and musician Chris Vinson created his own website.

Bandzoogle is a drag-and-drop website builder, meaning all its templates are customizable, without the need to code anything yourself. It may not be quite as polished as the big names like Wix and Squarespace, but it has handy features like easy SoundCloud and YouTube integration, and commission-free selling for merch and tickets.

Bandzoogle offers three paid plans. The $8.29/month Lite plan is the cheapest, but you’ll be capped at 10 pages and 10 tracks. The $16.63/month Pro plan is the priciest, and it offers unlimited pages, tracks, and mailing list subscribers.

bandzoogle homepage

Music Glue

Music Glue Pros

  • Great ecommerce features
  • Ability to set up pre-orders

Music Glue Cons

  • £4.99 monthly fee plus 2% commission on gross revenue

Music Glue is an ecommerce-heavy platform that lets you set up your music website for a monthly fee, with some useful features like advanced data tools and merch pre-orders.

So, what’s the catch? Music Glue takes a 2% commission of your gross revenue. If you’re not making money, you won’t have to pay anything – but once your sales take off, you’ll notice the fees coming out of your revenue!

music glue homepage

BandVista

BandVista Pros

  • Users praise its ease of use
  • Affordable plans

BandVista Cons

  • Templates are all very similar, and look dated

BandVista makes it easy to upload video and music files. The cheapest plan allows for 50 music tracks and 1,000 newsletter subscribers, while the priciest plan offers 1,000 music tracks and 25,000 newsletter subscribers.

BandVista’s templates aren’t a standout feature – they’re a bit cluttered, and although there are a few to choose from, they all look pretty similar. If creative expression is important to you, you may want to look elsewhere. That said, at $9.95/month, BandVista’s cheapest plan is affordable for what you get.

FAQs

WordPress is a super powerful content management system. If you have the time, and some coding experience, it’s a solid way to build your website. But frankly, website builders are so advanced these days, that there’s no real advantage to using WordPress in terms of features. If you want the freedom to customize, go with Wix; there’s nothing you can’t drag and drop, and you can even add your own code if that floats your boat.

Wix came out on top in our user testing for ease of use. Its whole message is that anyone can build a website, and in our experience, it fully delivers on this promise. Plus, it manages to balance ease of use with powerful features, which is rare.

Technically, a musician doesn’t need anything, except maybe a guitar… But yes, in order to be a successful musician in today’s world, you’ll need your own website! Social media profiles are helpful, too, but they just can’t offer the same personalization and all-in-one information for your fans.

There are two main ways to start selling on your music website. You can sign up for an ecommerce plan with most website builders, but these will cost more each month than a regular, non-selling plan. So the cheaper way to sell online is by using Square Online Checkout links, which you can then post on your own site to conduct purchases – no pricey ecommerce plan required!

Ultimately it’s up to you, but we recommend including an “About Us” page, audio files to preview your work, an events calendar of upcoming shows, and links to your social media feeds. All six builders ranked in this article offer these capabilities.

If you’ve made it to the end of this article, then congratulations – you now know the six best website builders for musicians. But what about the best website builders in general? We’ve ranked those, too!

For over nine years I have worked as a mixed method researcher – research using a mix of numerical data and personal experiences – across a range of sectors, from insurance and policy development to finally arriving at Website Builder Expert five years ago. Fascinated by consumer decision-making, I meticulously built our leading ranking methodology to explore where providers like Wix sit within a competitive industry and what value they truly bring to our audience.

As a member of the Market Research Society, I’m an advocate for high ethical, commercial, and methodological best practices. All of this combines to give you the most ethical recommendations based on real data.
